The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith.
It’s relaxed, low key, friendly and fun.
There is a meal together at the beginning of each session which gives an opportunity to get to know each other.
Listen, learn, discuss and discover. And ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile.
And it’s supported by all the main Christian denominations.
Alpha is for everyone, especially:
Those wanting to investigate Christianity
New Christians
Newcomers to the Church
Those who want to brush up on the basics of Christianity.
The Alpha course consists of a series of talks looking at topics such as ‘Who is Jesus?’, ‘Why and how do I pray?’ and ‘Why and how should I read the Bible?’
There is no charge for the Alpha course, although you will be asked to make a contribution towards the cost of the meal.
The course is on a Tuesday evening at 19h00.
Each Alpha evening starts with a time of prayer at 18h30 for leaders. Guests arrive for 19h00 and we finish by 21h30. The format of each evening is supper, followed by a DVD talk and small group discussion.
Please Contact Glen Ford or The RCC Parish for more information. See Alpha Rivonia Facebook Page/@AlphaRivonia Twitter Handle for further updates.
Catechism is on Sundays from 08h30 to 9h15. Please ensure your child arrives on time. We encourage parents to celebrate Mass with their children either before or after the class.
Confirmation group meets on Monday evenings from 18h00 to 19h00.
CATECHESIS AND THE FAMILYThe family is the fundamental environment for catechesis. The Second Vatican Council’s declaration on Christian education puts it very clearly: “Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children. The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute” (Gravissimum Educationis No 3).
The General Directory for Catechesis presents the family as a source of catechesis which holds a privileged position. It states that the family is in the unique position to teach the Gospel by rooting it in profound human values. It lists the awakening of a sense of God, the first steps in prayer, the education of a Christian conscience, formation in the Christian sense of love as examples of Christian education which is ‘more witnessed than taught.’ Sensitive to the contemporary breakdown in family life in international culture, the GDC emphasizes the growing importance of the faith of grandparents in family catechesis. It states, “their wisdom and sense of the religious is often decisive in creating a true Christian climate. (GDC No 255).
The parish is the primary place where the Christian community “is formed and expressed”. The General Directory for Catechesis states that the Christian Community is the “the origin, locus [place] and goal of catechesis” (GDC 254) and therefore, it is the “usual place in which the faith is born and in which it grows” (GDC 257).
